About Enrolling
Coming to Ngaio School - What should we do?
All prospective enrolments
- Ring Helen Shields in the office to check that you are in zone.
- If you are definitely coming, Helen will post you an enrolment pack.
- If you are not sure, Helen will post you an information sheet about the school.
- Make an appointment to meet the Principal.
Five-year-old new entrants
- It is suggested that you begin the above process about 5 - 6 weeks before your child is five years old.
- Prior to this process, you may like to come to an Information Afternoon. These are held each term. Most preschools receive information about these but you can ring the office for the next date. The Ngaio School PTA provides a crèche for these meetings.
- New entrants usually have two school visits before starting school. They come to school with a parent and stay for about 1.5 hours each time. We suggest making visits at two different times. The visits are usually in the 2 weeks before beginning school.
Older Children Enrolling at Ngaio School
- The enrolment process can begin when you are sure that you are enrolling your child at Ngaio School. The time period will vary according to the individual situation.
- You can contact us by phone, fax or email and we will send you the relevant information.
- When you are in Ngaio, it is a good idea to visit the Principal and discuss your child's needs so that the class placement can be the most appropriate for your child.
- If there is time available, a visit can be arranged before your child formally starts at Ngaio School. New children are given a buddy to help them find their feet and settle in easily.
Enrolment Scheme
Ngaio School has had an enrolment scheme in place since
January 2001.
The Zone
The official description of the zone is as follows:
Home Zone
All students who live within
the home zone described below (and/or shown on the attached map) shall be entitled
to enrol at the school. Ngaio School's normal geographic zone includes streets
arising within the following area. The area is defined by the following access
points to Ngaio and shown on the accompanying map.
- North from the intersection of Kaiwharawhara Road and Old Porirua
Road.
- East of the Railway overbridge: which excludes Churchill Drive and
includes Waikowhai Street.
- South of the midline of Lucknow Terrace. West of Cockayne Rd between
Lucknow Terrace and Calcutta Street. Both sides of Cockayne Road from the
south corner of Calcutta Street through all increasing numbers (excluding
Calcutta Street). All of Punjab Street, all of Kabul Street - NOT Waru Street.
- West of the intersection of Fox Street and Amapur Drive. Including
Fox Street and excluding Amapur Drive.
Applications
Students who live outside the zone and wish to attend Ngaio School must apply
in the annual ballot. Each year the Board estimates the total number of places
that will be available for out of zone enrolments during the next year. Applications
for these places are invited at the end of Term 3, and balloting takes place early
in Term 4. The following priorities of ballot application apply at the school:
First Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of
current students.
Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former
students.
Third priority will be given to applicants who are children of board
employees.
Fourth priority will be given to all other applicants.
If there are more applicants than available places, a ballot will be carried out under police supervision.
The positions will then be offered to applicants in ranking order. If a successful applicant declines the position,
it will be offered to the next highest ranking applicant.
