About Us

Ngaio School was established in 1908 and is composed of wooden buildings nestled in the heart of Ngaio. The school aims to lay the foundations for lifelong learning. It has children from Years 1 to 6 and is proud of its achievements.

The school has developed systems to ensure children are supported so that they can achieve their potential in a holistic sense. Young children have a senior buddy who can assist them in the playground if they require support. Classes work closely together both as part of a syndicate and as junior/senior paired classes. There is an EnviroGroup of children from years 2 to 6. These children meet regularly and lead initiatives to improve the school grounds and develop and implement environmentally friendly policies.

There is a strong commitment to teaching the National Curriculum in its broadest sense. Children's progress in literacy and mathematics is closely monitored and additional support is provided for those who require it. Alternatively, opportunities are provided for those who excel in particular areas to be extended in areas of strength.

Ngaio School has a strong commitment to providing broad education possible. There are regular visits to the local public library, visiting performers entertain the children each term, there are vital kapa haka and choir groups and class and syndicate trips are held to places of interest and cultural events.

Physical fitness is seen as important with daily fitness activities. There are a wide range of sports teams and senior children participate in inter-school sports activities.

The school is recognised for its strong focus on the arts. Music classes are provided as part of the classroom programme and there is private instrumental tuition available in keyboard and drums during the school day and dance tuition during out of school hours.

Ngaio School is an Apple school. This provides many children with PCs in their own homes with a wider experience. Children learn to make IMovies, use a digital camera as well as becoming familiar with computers.

The school environment reflects Ngaio School's green colour. There is an Arboretum, adventure playgrounds, a large sports field, shade areas and hard court areas. In the warmer months, the children can swim in a heated swimming pool.

Children of working parents can be cared for before and after school in the Ngaio School Out of School Care programme (NOSCAR). Holiday programmes are provided for one week of each school holidays. Parents are welcome at school to assist in classrooms and assist the school in a wide variety of ways as their time allows. The Ngaio School PTA is an enthusiastic, capable group of parents who contribute much of their time and energy into providing quality resources and supporting school programmes for the children.

The Board of Trustees meets each month and governs the school capably and with the central goal being to provide the best quality education for all of the children.

Ngaio School promotes a happy, purposeful atmosphere for children, teachers, parents and the wider community.
